{"id":73,"date":"2009-05-18T23:33:09","date_gmt":"2009-05-18T12:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/vc.id.au\/blog2\/?p=73"},"modified":"2009-05-19T08:19:56","modified_gmt":"2009-05-18T21:19:56","slug":"a-stolen-hat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vc.id.au\/blog2\/2009\/05\/a-stolen-hat\/","title":{"rendered":"A stolen hat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In searching the 19th Century English Newspapers for Maggie&#8217;s Gormans, we came across the following intriguing item in the Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle for July 13 1861:<\/p>\n<p>William Taylor a respectably<br \/>\ndressed young man, was charged with stealing a hat on<br \/>\nthe previous Sunday, at the Independent<br \/>\nChapel, High-street, the property of Mr. George Gorman,<br \/>\nship&#8217;s steward. Mr. Gorman attended service at the<br \/>\nIndependent Chapel, High-street, on Sunday evening,<br \/>\nthe 30th of June, and placed his hat, of the value of 13s.,<br \/>\non the window ledge near where he was sitting. The<br \/>\nprisoner, a stranger to the congregation, was present, and<br \/>\nat the conclusion of the service, took the hat and walked<br \/>\noff. About an hour afterwards he was apprehended by<br \/>\nP. C. Littlefield, in the street, with the hat on his head.<br \/>\nHe said he took it by mistake, but which could not be the<br \/>\ncase, as he had only a cap with him when he went into<br \/>\nthe chapel.
