CHAPEL.
[heading]
At
a Meeting of the Committee, held at the House of W. N. Firebrace Esq. on
Tuesday the 30th day of August 1808 - a statement of the Funds Subscribed was
laid before the Members, in order that some determination might be formed
relative to the entering into a Contract for the Building of the Chapel - It
being then found, that there was a deficiency of very nearly one-third of the
Sum required for the completion of the proposed Building; - It was Resolved,
that the Contract could not with propriety be closed with any Builder, until
such time as the whole amount of the Cost should be at least Subscribed. - This
period the Committee humbly trust is not far distant; and, from an anxious
desire to carry into execution an institution so necessary to the
respectability as well as the Religious benefit of the Community; they take
this opportunity of calling for the assistance of all well disposed Persons,
whom different causes, (but chiefly the idea which has prevailed, that the
design would not finally be successful) may have hitherto prevented from
contributing to its accomplishment.
In
returning their sincere thanks to those Members of Society who have already
come forward with their Names, they beg leave to acquaint them that the speedy
Payment of their several Subscriptions will now considerably facilitate the
object in view.
Farther
Contribution, either in Cash or Materials for the Building, will be thankfully
received by any Member of the Committee.

We
have nothing to add, in point of News to what we laid before our Readers last
Week. We understand that some Barbados Papers have been received in Town by
way of Berbice, but we learn that their contents are not at all interesting.
This
Day at Noon the Jane Schooner, Captain Belding, arrived in 27 Days from
Halifax, with a Cargo of Fish, &c. Two Days previous to her departure,
intelligence arrived from Washington with an account that a Vessel was to have
sailed on the 6th ult. for England and France with dispatches. The Embargo
still continues, and Congress is not expected to meet until November.
We
have heard with much regret that a Colony Schr. the Dolphin from Surinam, was
chased on the shore in the course of this week by a French Privateer,
notwithstanding that all the Vessels on this Station are out in quest of the
Enemy. It is feared, that by the simple appearance of the Privateer, that she
is mistaken by our Cruizers for a Colony Boat, she having no top-sails, or any
thing in appearance to distinguish her from a Drogher.
