Secretary's Office, April 8, 1815.
Charles Wilday, Sworn-Clerk.
The Colonies. - What a delightful life of
uncertainty we again enjoy! - At first, with commendable resignation, we made
up our minds to become Dutch; in consequence of the restoration of these
realms, and all that therein is! - Then again, to continue in our present state
of betweenity; the scale somewhat preponderating in favour of being British! -
After that, we thought it right to recommend, the importation of Scandinavian
dictionaries; and, for the purpose of understanding them, a more intimate
acquaintance with the northern-light! - Lastly, and after all this tacking, we
considered ourselves as bona fide British; and of course came to anchor
immediately, and laid up in ordinary soon after! - Now, however, to the
transmogrification of us all, we are once more ordered into a state of commission,
and to prepare ourselves for the proper reception of the Dutch flag!
The Brig Mechanic, from Portland, N.A.
mentioned in a former Paper, having brought lumber, which is a prohibited
article - has departed this anchorage in search of a market.
We regret having to announce the
following captures: - the Lady Pelham Packet, late from this river; and the
schooner Mudian Lass.
The Queen Charlotte Packet, which sailed
hence in December last, had a very smart action with a vessel, which afterwards
proved to be a British brig of war.
The Fox Packet, now in the river - will
sail on her homeward-route on Wednesday next.
Since our last, there have been two
arrivals from Barbados, but the Alert schooner, is the only one by whom we have
received intelligence from that quarter.
His Majesty's ship Venerable, 74,
returned yesterday, from a cruise to windward, and re-hoisted the Flag of
Admiral Sir Charles Durham; which was shortly afterwards saluted by the
Leander, Sir G. Collier, and Newcastle and Acasta frigates, which ships were in
quest of the Constitution American frigate, with the Cyane British sloop of war
[her prize] that had escaped from them off the Cape de Verd Islands, and had
since been chaced [sic] by them for some time, during which they had nearly got
the former within gun-shot, when a fog suddenly interposed, and percluded [sic]
our men of war from ascertaining the course that had been shaped by the enemy.
Entered of the Custom-House.
March 14. - Brig Margaret, from St. John
[sic], N.B.
- Schooner Hazard, Barbados.
16 - Schooner Aulert, ditto.
- Schooner Cooler, from
Bermuda.
CLEARED.
12 - Schooner Friends, Halifax.
15 - Ship Amelia, London.
- Ship John, do.
