[No. 1017.

To the Editor of the Royal Gazette.
I hope, Sir, you will be obliging enough to insert the following reflections on the subject of Seduction, in this day's gazette: -
There are crimes of a deadlier complexion, and more destructive to the the peace and security of society, than murder itself. He that deliberately and systematically draws from the paths of virtue the mother of a young and numerous offspring, and seduces her from her plighted duties to her affectionate husband - atrociously pillages, murders, and destroys. Adieu to the morality of social intercourse, if such an assassin is not hooted and stigmatized by every friend of honour. See the mother, who once walked in the path of virtue, hurled at once into vice and debasement - her moral principles corrupted, and sapped to the very basis! - See the once attentive parent for ever lost to her suffering children! deprived too at a season most needed for her aid and maternal care! They, poor innocents, were no coadjutors to her weakness and guilt, but they become the greatest sufferers, and participate the mournful results. Every succeeding day will usher in to shew them more and more reason for imprecating the denunciations of the Almighty upon the head of the monster who artfully and cruelly seduced their mother. Their early minds, taught to understand her apostacy, will soon acquire a feeling of the most poignant agony. They are branded with the indelible marks of her shame - and the very name of the ruthless monster who swerved her from decorum, will serve as a beacon to warn them of the dangerous precipice a woman stands upon, when she is persuaded to listen to the tale of the lurking seducer. The poor husband, too, who centered all his hopes and felicity in her, has all his comforts and prospects suddenly wrested from him, and is left a prey to the torturse of single wretchedness! And with respect to the delinquent herself - what is she to expect but the acute writhings of remorse, and poverty? - The infamous serpent who seduced her from her duty, may for a season gratify her taste, and allure her from sober meditation; but the transient gratification of the moment will soon evaporate - the satiated passions revolt from pleasure - the innate colours of the man appear - his real temper predominate - and the infatuated wretch is soon hurled by him into the abyss of dismay!
I am, yours, &c.
Conjux.
