Mr. J. P. H. Van Schuler, in the Royal
Gazette of 26th April, has published that he [illegible] "coming in to
make opposition against the passing or giving away of my concession or lot No.
72, to M. J. Kozeen," (as intimated by me in the Secretary's Office,
because he pretends to have a large demand against me, as formerly First
Marshal, for having sold the plantation Fridriva Johanna, his "lawful
property," although he had enterd the most solemn protest against such
proceeding, &c.
It is therefore incumbent on me, to
remove such an impression as this charge might be instrumental in producing on
the public mind, by declaring, that in my capacity above alluded to, I acted
upon proper authority, and due course; and as the transaction took place seven
years ago, in all which time I never heard of any protest, &c. it might be
well for Mr. Von Schuler to take the necessary legal steps to obtain redress,
if I have acted unjustly; but, in the mean time, I am bold to affirm to the
public, that his imputation is wholly groundless.
Demerary, 3d May, 1817.
Mart. Smit.
Mr. Talboys having been arrested at the
suit of J. H. Faber, Esq. on account of the article which lately appeared in
the Guiana Chronicle; the trial of the question, as to the legality of the
arrest, came on yesterday before the Honourable Court of Justice. M. Downie,
Esq. for Mr. Talboys; and J. Van Koetsveldt Du Crocq, Esq. for Mr. Faber. The
decision was postponed to Monday.
