Smuggling. [heading]
To the Editor of the Royal Gazette.
[centered]
Observing in your paper of the 15th
instant, a notification to the subscribers, "for a piece of plate intended
to be presented" to one of the oldest and most respectable inhabitants of
this Colony, Charles Edmonstone, Esq. - I cannot help remarking, that the
subscription had been carried on in that underhand way which was never yet
known in this Colony, in the good old times, when friendship and sincerity
reigned; and that too, by persons almost strangers, but who are designated the
Great Wheels. What, sir, must the feeling of so worthy a character as Mr.
Edmonstone be, when a small junto of the Community only come forth, while the
great mass of this society would have gladly contributed their share in the
intended present? Had a meeting been called, as formerly was done on such
occasions as this, I have no doubt but more ample funds would have been
subscribed by some old inhabitants, who know how to appreciate his character
and services to this Colony, although not what are vulgarly called "Great
Wheels." The mark of respect would have been more grateful to the
feelings of the individual.
A Little Wheel.
