Proclamation.
[heading]
By
His Excellency Major General John Murray, Lieutenant-Governor and Commander in
Chief, in and over the United Colony of Demerary and Essequebo, with their
Dependencies, &c. &c.
Whereas
the general good conduct of the Slaves throughout the United Colony, entitle
them to every reasonable indulgence - the usual Holidays are allowed,
commencing with Christmas Day or Thursday the 25th instant.
It
being, however, inexpedient that the Festivities should be extended beyond the
usual term, the Holidays are hereby strictly limited to Christmas and the Day
following.
I
do, therefore, hereby particularly enjoin all Proprietors, Attornies of Estates,
Managers, and other Persons having the charge of Slaves, that they have the
Slaves under their care regularly mustered and employed in such manner, as they
see fit on Saturday the 27th instant; even although they should in consequence
of extraordinary good conduct, have promised them an extra day, which may in
such cases be granted at another time.
The
Burgher Officers, and all other Persons in authority, are charged to see that
this my Proclamation is duly observed, and are hereby required to report any
violation of it, which may come to their knowledge, to myself, or one of their
Honors the Fiscals.
And
I do, further, strongly recommend it to all Planters, and others having the
charge ef [sic] Estates, to remain as much as possible at Home, during the approaching
Holidays, to maintain order amongst the Slaves under their care.
And
whereas Bush-Negroes and other Runaways, may avail themselves of the occasion
to mix with the Slaves on the Plantations - all Proprietors, Attornies,
Managers, and Overseers, are required to be particular in examining the Passes
of any Strangers found among the Gangs under their charge, and to give strict
orders to their trusty Slaves, to bring before them any such Strangers as may
be unprovided therewith - who are to be in that case secured, and committed to
prison.
Given
under my Hand and Seal-at-Arms, at the King's House, in George-town, this
Sixteenth Day of December, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventeen, and in the
Fifty-Eighth Year of His Majesty's Reign.
GOD
SAVE THE KING!
By
His Excellency's Command,
W.
C. Tonge, Assist. Gov. Sec.
We
have not heard of any arrival, but the brig Sarah, Capt. Clements, from Quebec,
