It is beyond the scope of this guide to give a history of Dutch cartography in the early modern period or to treat the activities of the various colonial organizations cited above. The inventories by Leupe and l'Honoré Naber contain extensive introductions to the subject matter. There is a voluminous literature in English, Dutch and other languages easily available on the history of Dutch seafaring, commerce and colonialism. We therefore limit ourselves here to giving a few references that will be useful to researchers studying the maps and drawings contained in this microfiche set.
