INDEXES TO THE COLLECTION OF FOREIGN MAPS, P.A. LEUPE (VEL) AND S.P. L'HONORÉ NABER (VELH) (compiled by Louisa Balk, General State Archives) Note to the reader This index was compiled in the Dutch language, the language used in the great majority of atlases, maps and other visual documents in this collection. The spelling of geographical place names has been left in Dutch, since in most cases there is little difference with the English spelling. Where confusion was likely, however, the English equivalent has been given in square brackets after the Dutch name. A short glossary in English of Dutch cartographical and geographical terms has been appended to the present guide as a convenience to readers with no Dutch. It does not pretend to be exhaustive and readers are advised to consult a dictionary when in doubt. In the index to personal names which follows, the word "litt." has been used to refer to the atlases' letter codes A, B, etc. in order to distinguish them from initials belonging to personal names. Where there is just a number, for example 555, the reference is to VEL. VELH references are preceded by those letters in boldface type. In the indexes "Verbeteringen en Toevoegsels" refers to pp. 148-149 of the supplement by l'Honoré Naber where he listed some "corrections and additions". |
